60 Second Review – BiLT Explorer Helmet

The BiLT Explorer Adventure helmet is a Chinese built helmet sold exclusively through Cycle Gear stores and the their website. Often labeled as being on sale for 50% off, I have never seen this helmet listed at the full retail price. This is a dual sport style helmet made with an injection molded ABS shell. The helmet features a “quick release” clear shield, however the peak needs to be removed when switching or removing the shield. The shield is non-ratcheting but remains in place wherever the user decided to place it. A separate flip-down internal sun shield is easy to operate even with gloved hands using a slide mounted on the side of the helmet. The helmet has numerous vents on the chin bar and along the top of the helmet with two exhaust vents on the back. The padding is removable for cleaning. The strap does not feature a quick release buckle relying solely on the standard double D-ring found on most entry level helmets. The helmet does meet DOT standards. Sold in solid colors as Hi-Viz yellow, pearl white, silver and matte black.
The helmet does provide good visibility, but ventilation could be improved. As with most DS style helmets, the Explore is quite loud at highway speeds. I also found this helmet to be heavy. After a month’s worth of heavy use the foam core did break-in to the point of fitting a full size larger than when new.
